“The Critical Public Interest”
by Paul Bass | Oct 14, 2005 6:06 pm | Comments (0)
“The critical public interest in openness and transparency in state contracting—especially involving more than $600 million of state funds—compels the release of these documents, as I urged in July, 2005. There is no legal bar to disclosure.” So wrote Attorney General Richard Blumenthal Friday in a letter to the head of the state’s Department of Social Services urging her to release documents on how HMOs administer the HUSKY program. Following is the text of the letter.

Jodi Rell ordered her administration to release documents sought in an ongoing dispute over the public’s right to know how HMOs are running HUSKY, the state’s health care program for struggling families. Legal aid lawyers including New Haven’s Sheldon Toubman (pictured) praised the governor but said a showdown continues over whether taxpayers will be able to find out all they need to know about how HMOs are spending $625 million in health care for the poor.

A Letter to the Governor
by Paul Bass | Oct 11, 2005 1:59 pm | Comments (0)
Gov. Jodi Rell made a powerful statement in favor of the public knowing how hundreds of millions of its tax dollars are spent in providing health care for the poor. Yet her own appointees are defying those words and blocking the public from seeing documents about how HMOs administer the state’s HUSKY program. On Tuesday, in advance of an upcoming Freedom of Information Commission hearing, legal aid lawyers wrote to the governor asking her to put her words into action.
