Health Care
Well-Meaning Bill Threatens Connecticut
by Staff | Jul 27, 2007 11:36 am | Comments (0)
There’s one problem with a U.S. Senate bill that would help people in other states obtain mental-health care: It would weaken care in states like Connecticut that already have stronger laws. “My heart goes out to patients in other states who have no mental health protections,” said state Healthcare Advocate Kevin P. Lembo (pictured). “But at the end of the day we must protect the people of Connecticut from unwelcome and unwise federal preemption of our laws.” Click here to read a release about what Lembo and AG Blumenthal are doing about it.
Movie Invite Shunned

Health care advocates attempted to deliver two “Sicko” movie tickets along with a letter to Aetna CEO Ronald Williams, but were thwarted by a security guard who was unable to offer them any sort of guarantee, aside from his word, that Williams would receive it. Click here to read Independent Capitol correspondent Christine Stuart’s coverage of a march on the insurance giant, which reported $451.3 million in second-quarter profits.
Will Bush Stop State From Insuring More Kids?
by Melinda Tuhus | Jul 17, 2007 9:53 am | Comments (1)
Connecticut has big plans to increase the number of low-income kids covered by health insurance. But the Bush administration has opposite plans, so a bevy of key players in the state led by U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (pictured) gathered at the Hill Health Center to explain exactly what’s at stake.

Community Seeks Early Start For Kids At Risk
by Allan Appel | Jul 12, 2007 10:02 am | Comments (0)
Of the approximately 2,000 kids born every year in the city, 275 are born to teen mothers; 500 are born to mothers who receive inadequate prenatal care, and about 220 have low -irth weight. Also, when they are ready to enter school, only a third or so have the skills needed for kindergarten-level literacy. And it doesn’t get a whole lot better by third grade, where, according to 2006 statistics, only 33.2 percent scored proficient or above on a standardized reading test. Click here to read a story about a new community-wide effort in New Haven to turn all that around.
