Backers Rally As Rell Gets Pooling Bill

5-27-08-blumie.jpgAttorney General Richard Blumenthal released an opinion Tuesday saying that threats made by insurance companies to increase rates to the state employees health insurance plan are unfounded. Full story here. (Background story here.)

Blumenthal said that a bill expanding the state employees health insurance plan to nonprofits, municipalities, and small businesses will create an entirely new pool of individuals, separate from the pool of state employees covered by the pending contract. At a press conference Tuesday morning he said the three health insurance companies that bid on the state employees health insurance plan are legally bound to adhere to the rates they offered in those bids. Medicare Supplemental Rate Increase Criticized

The state Insurance Department approved a 30 percent increase in Genworth’s Medicare Supplemental plans for 2,049 customers in the state who use the plan to cover benefits not covered by traditional Medicare.

The Insurance Department’s decision late Tuesday afternoon has State Healthcare Advocate Kevin Lembo and Judith Stein, director of the Center for Medicare Advocacy, upset with the Insurance Department for its industry friendly decision.
