Warning against airborne cigarettes, Yale has weighed in against Toad’s Place’s plans to add a smoking rooftop deck.
The university’s real estate arm, the dominant landlord in the Broadway/ York Street district, sent a letter to New Haven’s City Plan Department raising “serious concerns” about the proposal “involving public health policy and public safety.”
Confab Confused On H1N1 Planning

When the so-called swine flu returns this fall, keep sick children at home, don’t spread the infection to co-workers, and ultimately, Gov. M. Jodi Rell told a gathering in town, “use common sense.”
That was Rell’s ultimate advice during a Wednesday meeting at Southern Connecticut State University with educators and state, and local public health officials on how to cope with an expected upsurge in swine flu cases in the coming months.
“Sometimes we can only use common sense with H1N1,” she said.
The knottier problems of making up lost federal funds for absent students, and who should receive a vaccine, if one is developed by then, remained unanswered for now.

The state legislature Monday overrode Rell’s health reform veto. “The insurance capitol of the country just passed a bill that provides a framework for a public option,” Juan Figueroa, president of the Universal Health Care Foundation, said as he celebrated with supporters on the fourth floor of the state Capitol. Anthem Rate Hike Under Microscope

The state’s Insurance Department will hold a public hearing Monday to address Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s proposed rate increase, which if approved could increase rates as much as 32 percent.
Some of the 56,000 Connecticut residents enrolled in Anthem’s individual insurance plans will be allowed to testify at the public hearing.
Also the state Healthcare Advocate and Attorney General were granted limited-intervenor status which means they will have an opportunity to present one witness and cross-examine Anthem’s witnesses.

Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell was at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford Wednesday for a ceremonial signing of a bill that expands health insurance coverage for children with autism.
When asked if this the insurance industry considered this a friendly piece of legislation, Rell said it expands coverage, but does not increase costs “astronomically.”
