So rejoiced the state’s health care advocate, Kevin Lembo (pictured), in referene to a judge’s ruling that HMOs must reveal how much of the $700 million they get in taxpayer money goes to run Connecticut’s health-care program for the poor, and how much goes to their own overhead and executive pay.

The hospital’s fault, and the fault of caregivers who didn’t deal properly with a mentally ill man. That’s the gist of a new lawsuit filed by the estate of Hiram Marrero, the knife-wielding psychotic man who was killed by a New Haven cop in a case that plunged the city into a reexamination of how police deal with the mentally ill and led to a recommendation to arm officers with Tasers (pictured). Jane Mills reports.

City Seeks HUSKY Awareness Funds

The City of New Haven approved an application Monday for $50,000 in state funds to get out the word to uninsured kids about the HUSKY state health insurance plan. The city’s application plugs into a recent state initiative to use $1 million to spread HUSKY awareness to the state’s uninsured kids — 68,000 children under 18 spent last year without health insurance, according to Connecticut Voices for Children. The initiative is a first step to what some hope will follow: If key state legislators get on board, Democratic lawmakers could use a veto-proof majority to bring about universal health care for adults, too.

This second-grader slipped out of class for a quick sealant fix this week without even leaving school. The dental office, which serves the poor and uninsured, pops up out of the trunk of a car.

Dillon: “Expectations Are High”

As she waited in line to vote at New Haven’s Edgewood School Tuesday morning, State Rep. Pat Dillon gave her outlook on the prospects for health care reform in the coming legislative session. “Expectations are high” for increasing the number of people in Connecticut who can obtain health insurance, she said. Meet The Hill’s New Dentist for Kids

Yarniz Oquendo brought her two young daughters in for a check-up and teeth-cleaning at the Hill Health Center’s dental clinic. Luckily for them, a new pediatric dentist was on hand, a woman who came to New Haven for the “fulfilling” mission of working on the teeth of people who otherwise find it hard to see a dentist.
