Legal Aid Gets First
New Chief In 21 Years

A new helmswoman will oversee New Haven’s law firm for the poor come this September.

Susan Nofi-Bendici will become executive director of the agency, New Haven Legal Assistance Association. She replaces Patricia Kaplan, who has run the agency since 1991 and worked there for 34 years.

The legal problems of low-income people are tied to basic human needs,” Nofi-Bendici said in a press release announcing the transition. For these individuals, access to justice means access to a roof over one’s head, protection from violence at home, access to medical care or access to an appropriate education for a disabled child.”
