A cross-town car chase ended in a fiery crash on Interstate 95 Thursday, with bullets exploding in a burning car.
Three people were injured in the culminating car accident on the highway.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Dave Hartman:
Just after 4 p.m., police learned that a man wanted in New Haven for weapons crimes was in a home on Beers Street in the Dwight neighborhood. Cops kept an eye on the man’s car and waited for him to emerge from the house.
When he did come out, he got in the car and fled towards Ella T. Grasso Boulevard, where he got stuck in traffic. Police tried to block him in, but he slipped away and sped off.
Police pursued him through several neighborhoods and into East Haven. The man drove against traffic into Exit 52 on I‑95 south. His car struck another car and a box truck, then burst into flames. The man fled on foot and was caught minutes later on nearby Saltonstall Avenue.
The drivers of the car and the truck were taken to the hospital, along with the suspect, who complained of back pain.
A loaded gun remained in the burning car and several bullets exploded. No injuries resulted.
