Bread Broken
Before The Game”

Native New Haveners know the answer when someone pops the question in November, Are you going to THE GAME?” The question isn’t about Yale versus Harvard, but Hillhouse versus Cross.

The Annual Elm City Bowl happens on Thanksgiving, with the schools taking turns hosting the breakfast .{pic15} This Thursday it was Cross’s turn to host. As has been the case for decades, everyone from past and current administrators, to athletes, students, faculty, cheerleaders, band members, and class kings and queens, showed up to enjoy a good meal. For some, it was a reunion; for others it was a time to chat before they took their respective sides in the stadium.

Schools Superintendent Reggie Mayo made the rounds and checked in with all the generations, including retired pupil personnel director Eleanor Boyd and new Hillhouse Principal Kermit Caroline.

Hillhouse’s varsity cheerleaders fueled up …

… before they used their energy on the field.

As did the Cross squad.

The main event came last, of course — and didn’t fail to keep people glued to the stands until the end. Hillhouse squeaked out a 30 – 28 victory; read the Register’s coverage here. A brief fight broke out at halftime; police made six arrests.
