Concerned about sub-freezing temperatures, the city is opening daytime centers for people with nowhere else to stay warm.

Seekng homeless people sleeping in the cold last winter, Officer Dan Hartnett peers down an icy and dangerous declivity toward the railroad tracks off William Street.

In addition, the police department plans to have patrol officers look for homeless people staying outside overnight during this cold snap to help them find safer shelter. (Click here for a story about those patrols last year.)

And Mayor Toni Harp said that the city is upping the number of beds available at homeless shelters for the cold snap. If those all get filled, she plans to ask churches to make space available.

Call the city’s emergency operations center at 203 – 946-8221 for more information about cold-related problems. Click here, and scroll down, for information on frostbite and hypothermia.
