In a “probable suicide,” a man stabbed a 21-year-old “acquaintance” inside the Taft Apartments early Monday, then jumped to his death.
So reported police spokesman Officer David Hartman.
The incident occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m. at the former hotel at the corner of Chapel and College streets.
The man “jumped from the ninth floor and landed on a third floor terrace,” Hartman reported. “He is deceased.”
The man was a member of Yale’s undergraduate class of 2015. He majored in philosophy and participated in conservative political groups. He maintained an occasional blog on Tumblr about his life at Yale. In the most recent entry, a year old, he wrote: “We live without remission or regret. We are dedicated to the intensity of living. On trains having arguments of philosophy so loudly that heads stare. Those arguments that shape how we live. We have nothing beyond those shining moments and care about nothing else.”
The acquaintance was described as “in stable condition” at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He is a member of Yale’s undergraduate class of 2017 as well as of a campus a capella/comedy group called Mixed Company.
Both were originally from Manchester, N.H.
“Detectives are interviewing a witness at this time,” Hartman added.
In an email message sent at noon Monday to the Yale community, Dean Jonathan Holloway reported on the “tragic news” and said mental-health counselors will be available to students 24 hours a day.
