The Arts Council put together its annual arts awards at a Lawn Club luncheon Friday. It decided this year to honor “creative collaborators” like public schools Supervisor for Music Regina Warner (pictured.) Read on to see who else won and why, and to check out Harold Shapiro’s portraits of them.
Jamie Burnett’s (pcitured second at left) lighting and scene design have brought “life, light and understanding to the work of artists for more than 25 years,” in the words of the Arts Council.
Jazz Haven (pictured third at left) “celebrat[es] New Haven’s rich jazz history through education and participation.”
Jonathan Berryman (pictured fourth at left) directs the Heritage Chorale of New Haven, oversees the music at Immanuel Missionary Church, and teaches at Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School.
Ruth Lapides (pictured fifth at left) won the “C. Newton Schenck II Award of Lifetime Achievement in and Contribution to the Arts Council of Greater New Haven.” A sculptor, Lapides was a moving force behind the development of New Haven’s hopping Audubon Arts District.
Factory Direct (pictured at bottom) is a project of Artspace. It arranges for artists to display in “factories and industrial settings.” The group has involved 13 Connecticut manufacturers who invite artists to produce art works in collaboration with factory workers, or use materials from the factories.
