Pit Bull Tased

Cops ended up drawing their tasers three separate times to subdue a pit bill that attacked a woman in Newhallville.

The episode occurred just after 11 a.m. Friday. Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman:

A woman on Thompson Street told Officers Mark Taylor, Brian Goddard, Hector Santiago, & Robert Levy that a vicious pit bull had launched an attack” against her through a hole in a fence and took a bite out of her pocketbook, was still a threat, and had temporarily retreated to the yard.”

She said the dog came at her, bearing its teeth. She blocked its bite with her pocketbook. Bystanders yelled to distract the dog, allowing the woman to escape,” according to Hartman.

The pit bull next charged at Officer Taylor. He shocked the pooched with a taser; the dog retreated[ed] to the yard.” Officer Animal Control Officer Tammy Hewston (who had arrived with Officer Stephani Johnson from the animal shelter) cautiously approached” the pit bull with a pole noose. The dog charged. Taylor fired the taser again, and Hewston got to safety. Officer Levy arrived, and before Animal Control was able to gain control, deployed his taser at the animal.

According to Officer Johnson, the dog didn’t have behavioral problems, but was rather protecting it’s property. It was a territorial issue.. The dog was returned to its owner, under the proviso it remain contained.”

Also from the weekend report, as compiled by Officer Hartman:

A man told police someone hit him in the face with a bottle outside a store at State Street and Warren Place in the Cedar Hill neighborhood around 9:45 p.m. Friday. The attacker and an accomplice (both sporting goatees”) took money from the victim’s pockets.

A clerk at Sam’s Food Mart at 63 York told cops that a masked man armed with a black semi-automatic came in around half past midnight” Saturday. The man pointed his gun at two customers, ordered they move toward the counter,” then ordered the clerk to give him money from the cash register. The clerk obliged, and the gunman left the store.”

A Metro cabbie told cops he picked up a customer on Day Street some time around 1 a.m. Saturday. The dispatcher’s information ended up being wrong. The cabbie pulled over to await the right address information from the dispatcher. Meanwhile, a man (also sporting a goatee” opened the came up, opened the cab door,” and held a silver, snub-nosed revolver” to the cabbie’s head. He demanded money. The cabbie handed over his
wallet, cell phone and cash. The robber hit him on the head with the gun and took off running, south on Day Street.”
