Victim Was Strangled

The state has completed an autopsy on a woman whose body was found Saturday morning at Union and Water streets.

The cause of death was asphyxia due to strangulation,” and the manner of death was a homicide, according to the office of the state medical examiner.

Police identified the woman as Cassandra Mead, 22, of East Haven. Police are investigating whether she may have been killed in another location and dumped on the street in New Haven, according to Officer Joe Avery. If she was killed in New Haven, her death would be the city’s 24th homicide so far this year.

Mead’s father said his daughter had suffered from bipolar disorder and drug addiction and had begun hanging out with the wrong people,” according to Bill Kaempffer’s story in the Register.

In other news, according to Avery:

A man was shot in the ankle in Fair Haven Tuesday night. The victim told police he was visiting a friend at 11:18 p.m. at Lloyd and Exchange streets when he was approached by three men with t‑shirts across their faces.

When the victim refused to hand over his possessions, he was shot in the ankle. A bullet casing was found at the scene.

A man walked into Yale-New Haven Hospital Tuesday night with stab wounds from a domestic incident at 11:53 p.m. at Whalley Avenue and Fitch Street.

And a man told police he was jumped by five men who struck him with a stick at 2 a.m. at Spring and Union streets.
