Midway into the third movement of Robert Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen, David Perry was well on his way to constructing an alternate universe — a place where Schumann’s fairy tales could spring to life at the surprising change of a note, a new thought emerging from the belly of a clarinet or flurry of piano keys.
Ryan Boyko sat by an open rear window late Thursday afternoon, inches from the East Rock backyard he may not enter, continuing by laptop to try to help Liberia contain the Ebola epidemic.

On Friday evening, Melissa Gonzales is planning to throw open her door, stand at the front of a pristine, clean-smelling storefront, and greet New Haveners from East Rock and beyond as she looks out from her news digs on State Street.
To translate a prize endorsement into votes, Dannel P. Malloy came to New Haven Sunday seeking to convert skeptical independent-minded voters like Eric Hermes.
Having just thanked the audience for “being here on this dog day of summer,” Ian and Dustin Meadows lifted their guitars like offerings for a third time, launching into the first verse of their new song “Julianna.”
Their lyrics (You only have to be a song Juliannaaaaa…) traveled to nearby booths, where New Haveners Pat Kane and Channing Harris exhorted the values of DoCoMoMo and the New Haven Preservation Trust to passing visitors.
Four years ago, members of the folk band Red Molly had a problem: They were down a guitar player, and searching for the member who would make their group complete again.

That’s the name, at least for now, of the colorful, graffiti-esque collaborative mural that will enliven the Humphrey Street underpass beneath I‑91 and connect the Jocelyn Square and East Rock neighborhoods.

“We’re going to take it from the top of the genie scene!” Laura Attanasio called from the back of Worthington Hooker Middle School’s auditorium.
On cue, the room began to transform: house lights went completely down, a spot flashed on, and soft feet were heard padding quickly across the modest stage. Suddenly, viewers were not in an East Rock school at all, but the far-away land of Agrabah, where Aladdin and his newfound friend the genie were brainstorming their escape from an evil Sultan’s cave.
