As the sailing season kicks off in New Haven, a new adult community sailing program is making waves and attracting attention from sailing enthusiasts across Greater New Haven. Sail Haven, a program of Canal Dock Boathouse, is gearing up for its first full season after a successful pilot in 2023, with a goal of doubling its membership and bringing the joy of sailing to more people than ever before.
This citizen contribution was submitted by LEAP’s Communications Coordinator Melissa Liriano.
The annual Leadership, Education, and Athletics in Partnership (LEAP) Spring Break College Tour is taking place this week.
LEAP, a New Haven youth development nonprofit organization, took 28 high school students on a college tour in Virginia and Maryland. They visited nine colleges and universities, five of which are historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). These schools include Norfolk State University, Hampton University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University, Coppin State University, the University of Richmond, the Maryland Institute of Art, Johns Hopkins University, and Loyola University. The Spring Break College Tour is entirely free for these students, with LEAP covering all costs, including bus transportation to and from each location, hotels, and meals.

Leadership, Education, and Athletics in Partnership, Inc.’s (LEAP) 29th annual LEAP Year was a great success, with new community connections made, fascinating topics discussed, and delicious food enjoyed by all. The fundraiser brought together public officials, business professionals, philanthropic donors, and volunteers to support LEAP’s mission of empowering New Haven’s youth to become leaders in their communities.

After losing their 14-year-old son in a tragic bicycle accident in May 2022, the family of Zayne Ali Thomas of New Haven has established a scholarship fund at Hamden Hall Country Day School where he had been a student.

On Saturday, Nov. 4, over a hundred people gathered at East Shore Park to celebrate 40 years of youth soccer in New Haven. Members of New Haven Youth Soccer, along with several city and state officials, came together for the league’s first “Founder’s Day” event. The event honors Dr. Douglas W. Rae, Professor Emeritus in the Yale School of Management, who founded New Haven Youth Soccer in the early 1980s.

Last Sunday, more than 200 members and friends of the Jewish community gathered to recognize Robyn Teplitzky’s four decades of leadership, advocacy, and service to a host of local organizations and agencies. Following an intense week that included violence in Israel and multiple bomb threats against Jewish institutions, the Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven’s Annual Award Celebration provided an opportunity for the community to gather in solidarity and support, and perhaps for a temporary antidote to the pain and grief.

Connecticut CASA, a New Haven-based nonprofit organization, submitted the following account of a recent event held on its behalf.
On July 20, Connecticut Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) held a “Cooking for CASA” Benefit with Chef Claire Criscuolo and a musical performance by Chynna Sherrod.
Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center has received the largest donation in its 55-year- history, a $1 million infusion that will support a wellness center within a new facility for women in recovery from addiction.
