An all-ages matinee show on Sunday at the Space Ballroom — one of the only clubs left in the area that does all-ages shows — proved to be ground zero for young rockers in the greater New Haven area, as three bands ramped up the energy to end the holiday weekend with a bang.

Black and Brown entrepreneurs will learn about “joint ventures” — and perhaps enter into one — with the help of a marijuana “manifesto” that’s in the works.
A female college student called Hamden police to tell them she awoke to find “an individual standing at the foot of her bed” after he entered her West Woods Road residence through an unsecured door. She screamed. He fled.

Dorian Bauknecht showed at Marshalls as usual, like she has nearly each weekend for the past 46 years. Unlike either five or forty years ago, she made sure her car doors were locked and her wallet was securely hidden, in fear of robberies that almost never occur in the shopping plaza but that have become hotly discussed throughout town.

Best Video brought back one of its most anticipated annual events on Saturday night: the Light Upon Blight live scoring of a horror film, and this year’s choice — the 1932 classic Vampyr — provided ample spooky and surreal images to inspire four musicians to create a matching soundtrack that suited the mood.

On a recent Tuesday afternoon, a 6’6’’ man approached Morse Street residents, motioned towards an empty lot at 560 Newhall St., and asked: “What would you like to see built there?”
They responded: Another neighborhood school, Dunkin’ Donuts, affordable apartments, a bike store, “I don’t know,” and “Who are you?”
The man starting the conversation was Jay Kaye, the only Independent Party member formally running for elected office this year in Hamden. (Al Lotto, also an independent, is running for mayor as a write-in candidate.) He is competing for one of six at-large Legislative Council seats, alongside four Democrats and four Republicans, in Nov. 2’s general election.

“It’s a perfect night for this,” said Best Video executive director Hank Hoffman, in introducing Thursday evening’s double bill of music from New Haven folk legend Kath Bloom, with Steve Hartlett opening. The weather on the patio in front of the film and cultural center on Whitney Avenue in Hamden was warm and crisp, the setting sun dappled with clouds, a bucolic setting for music that was all about acceptance.
(Updated) Hamden Mayor Curt Leng, who was trounced in a September primary and hasn’t been campaigning for reelection since, has filed paperwork to be a candidate in the Nov. 2 election … as a write-in candidate.
But he insists he’s not running. He’s not reentering the race. He’s making sure he’s ready in case a “Pluto” option presents itself.
