West siders gave the thumbs up — or rather raised green cards of support — to five nonprofits in their quest for support to nab a share of federal funding for local social services.
Quick reflexes helped a cop grab an unpermitted black Taurus 709 slim firearm with six live rounds inside during a car stop at Chapel Street and Central Avenue; and a repeat thief made off with bottles of Natty Daddy and Jose Cuervo

A woman admitted she was “too drunk to drive” — after she crashed into a car on the Boulevard, then one at Marvel Road and West Elm.
Meanwhile, a burglar left some scatalogical traces behind after making off with a DVD player, a laptop, and over 1,000 DVDs from the apartment of a man who was in the hospital.

Police don’t know whether an argument over canine bathroom habits led to a fire erupting in a tree on Valley Street.
They do know that someone made off with $5,000 worth of copper fittings, and someone else climbed a fence at the Connecticut Tennis Center and carted away powered landscaping equipment. And they discovered that a phony Craiglist ad apparently separated a Missouri woman of $1,750 that she thought was securing her an apartment on Central Avenue.

A Westville cop caught a man who swiped a purse out of the back seat of a car involved in a crash. A carpet-cleaning company employee swindled a customer out of an $8,000 rug, while another scammer (“Andrew Williams”) used the internet to bilk a Westville woman out of $500.

“Over the last few weeks, we have seen a decrease in car break-ins. This has been achieved by a partnership between the police and the community to address this uptick. The police have increased patrols, and arrested car thieves while residents have provided me with video footage (used to ID perps and help pinpoint areas to deploy resources) and remembered to lock their vehicles. Let’s keep it up!”
The housing authority has received key city sign-offs on its plans to redevelop two westside public housing complexes, as well as a tentative thumbs up for a tax abatement deal that would facilitate seven more property rehabs.
