Elm City Montessori students face off in tourney.
Odysseus Szarabajka was stuck in a corner. His opponent, Malachi Antoine, had decimated his army, sweeping all but two of his chess pieces off the board. All Szarabajka had left to defend his king was one lonely pawn, almost useless against Antoine’s powerful pieces.

Cops made another gun arrest a west side motel this past week, this time at the Regal Inn, and caught up with an alleged liquor store robber with an affinity for Amsterdam Vodka nips at the Three Judges Motel.

Robbers hit Westville Quality Market again, and officers responded to “found object” calls recovered six marijuana plants in Amity and a 12-gauge shot gun and a rifle wrapped in a rifle in a blanket on Fitch Street.
Meanwhile, a conveyer belt malfunction led to a bumper-bender at the car wash.

Officer Yonick Crawford caught a thief trying to make off with two 30-packs of Budweiser from the Amity Stop & Shop. Thieves at other west side locations had better luck escaping with a 55-inch TV and a Pee Wee Herman doll.

The Board of Education plans to tell state officials that it’s on board with extending Elm City Montessori School’s charter for another five years. But it will also send the state a message that it could use more financial support to keep the school open.

As Elm City Montessori faces an up-or-down vote on its continued existence next month, a tour of the school appears to have won over skeptics on the New Haven Board of Education.
The New Haven Police substation at 329 Valley St. is sandwiched between the West Hills school and the community center. And when school is closed the newest Little Free Library at the substation will still be open.

Every fall, incoming freshman are expected to participate in a Day of Service at Southern Connecticut State University and this year about 200 fanned out over the city to make an impact.
