Builder Unveils “Winchester Center” Plans

Hundreds of new apartments. Tens of thousands of square feet of office and lab space. Ground-floor retail up and down Winchester Avenue.

Science Park’s redevelopers unveiled those plans to Dixwell and Newhallville neighbors as they prepare to embark on the next stage of turning the former Winchester Arms factory complex into a research, residential, and shopping hub.

Over the last 28 years, Brazi’s Italian Restaurant, just down the walkway from Long Wharf Theatre, has played the role of host to such luminaries as Arthur Miller, Robert Redford, and Al Pacino, as well as Brian Dennehy and Amy Irving. 

So it’s perhaps no wonder that, on a recent morning, head chef Jesse Melgar was at the industrial stove, adding a touch of Chardonnay to a skillet popping with chicken cutlets, red bliss potatoes, and cherry peppers, before theatrically tossing its contents as a flame gushed upward.

Skappo Adds “Bottega” To Eatery

“La Bottega” has opened within the Skappo storefront.

Anna Sincavage will sell dresses in the morning and lasagna in the evening — all from 59 Crown St.

That’s the plan now that the family behind Skappo Italian Wine Bar is taking advantage of lower indoor dining demand to convert one corner of their restaurant into a new mini-shop, La Bottega.

The blue line of this chart represents the area currently subjected to 65 or more decibels of airplane noise from Tweed. The purple line represents the area that is projected to experience 65 or more decibels of noise by 2040 under the expansion plan.

Here’s the plan: The pandemic lifts. Air traffic comes roaring back. New Haven’s airport reaps the benefits with a longer runway.

New Master Plan Details Tweed Expansion

East Haven-bound?

Move the airport terminal across the border into East Haven. Extend the main runway by 1,035 feet to allow for longer-distance flights.

Both of those proposals are included in Tweed-New Haven Airport’s new master plan, which is slated to be submitted to federal regulators later this month.
