An Annex restaurant’s bid to survive the pandemic survived another day in housing court, after a judge recognized the restaurant owner’s recent hospitalization as a valid excuse for presenting a tardy defense against a pending eviction.

Dixwell Plaza’s planned redevelopment took a key step forward as alders voted to sell two parcels in the decaying mid-century shopping strip to a local team that plans to build apartments, stores, and cultural venues in the heart of New Haven’s historic Black neighborhood.

Leave it to Alba Estenoz, widely known in these parts as the celebrated pastry chef at Zinc, to feature a beet salad with goat cheese panna cotta as a way of introducing The Devil’s Diet, the new dessert bar on the Howe Street side of The Novella apartment complex at the corner of Chapel.
The oil sizzled as soon the salmon fillet hit the pan.
That noise was the hint that the fish would turn out crispy but not overcooked, explained Sandra Pittman, chef and co-owner of Sandra’s Next Generation.

Reward construction firms with a history of hiring women and Black and Latinx workers. Hold companies that fail to meet those goals accountable. And create more of an apprenticeship “pipeline.”
Those and other ideas emerged Tuesday night at the latest task force session on improving city affirmative action laws for contractors and construction workers.

“I have so much stuff planned for this place, and everybody’s like, ‘you’re crazy, you’re only 19 — how are you going to get all this done?”
So Ty Scurry — actor, singer, Wilbur Cross graduate, and theater director at Hillhouse High School — said with a humble chuckle about assuming ownership of Family Music Center in Hamden, which he hopes to not only rebuild out of its Covid-19 shutdown, but expand into a community-based center for students of the visual and performing arts.

To make the lemon chicken at Ali Baba’s Kitchen, Jamshed Khalid started by cutting boneless chicken breasts into strips. He then marinated it, for at least 12 hours, in a blend of special spices.
I wondered what was in the blend.
“Should I tell you?” Khalid responded with a laugh. “No.”

After its Reuben sandwich won accolades, the crew at Olmo decided to adapt the recipe to a breakfast sandwich.
As Olmo remodeled its Trumbull Street dining room during the pandemic to become a takeout storefront called the Bagelry, the retooled Breakfast Reuben has become a bestseller.
Some Dixwell neighbors are asking the Board of Alders to hold another committee hearing on the future of Dixwell Plaza after tech confusion delayed their participation in the first one.

With those words of praise and anticipation, alders moved ahead a plan to transform Dixwell Plaza into a mixed-use hub that would employ up to 550 people a year and generate up to $50 million in annual economic activity.
