Plan Previewed For Deepened Harbor Channel

The harbor, where main channel begins beyond the breakwater and would be extended into the Sound, as well as deepened.

You dredge, deepen and extend the New Haven harbor channel to bring in bigger ships leading to more efficient business.

Then you take the sand, silt, and other stuff you’ve hauled out of the depths and use it to shore up washing away beaches, to create new shellfish habitats and salt marshes. Who knows? Maybe you even find three of Fort Hale’s three missing 1779 cannon.

That rosy picture of an invigorated harbor all depends on one big if”: If the dredged out material is biologically safe —non-toxic, and suitable for such beneficial uses.

Imagine this day spent on Long Wharf: You take a trolley or bike through the stormwater” park that strategically connects to the Farmington Canal trail to the expanded IKEA village,” where you buy furniture or browse shops and restaurants. Then you jump back on the trail and head to the New Haven Food Terminal to pick up fresh produce and other sundries for a picnic. You take your bike and picnic lunch on a water taxi that ferries you across the Long Island Sound for an afternoon at Lighthouse Park.

Former Webster bank building: Downtown’s next hotel?

Hundreds of new apartments might start rising this year just east of the State Street railroad tracks. Three blocks west, five separate development projects are either completed or underway on a single block of Crown Street. Three new downtown hotels are taking shape.

So who’s worried about that conspicuous unbuilt stretch of asphalt where the New Haven Coliseum once stood?
