Pierluigi Mazzella never sleeps. This is because he’s obsessed. And in love.

At Monday’s CT Food Launchpad Pitch Night in East Rock, the founder and owner of fatto a mano stood beside the object that has kept him awake at all hours: the panettone, a towering round of sweet bread naturally leavened with sourdough and studded with organic raisins and semi-sweet Valrhona chocolate.

It took him 72 hours to make.

Jey’s Burger Brings 259 Orange Back To Life

You might call the 259 Orange a cheeseburger, a bacon burger, or an egg burger. Or maybe a short rib burger or an avocado burger.

The only thing certain is that the 259 Orange Burger nearly didn’t happen. Nor, for that matter, did Dangle’s Bar and Grill, which serves the 259 Burger, and which opened three weeks ago on 259 Orange just up the street from the New Haven County Courthouse.

New Farm Fence Makes Better Neighbors

Invasive species were taking over a chain link fence at the Ferry Street Farm and creating a barrier with the neighborhood, so a group of teen growing entrepreneurs” got to work on a new mesh wire wooden replacement.

A crowd celebrated the completion of the job Saturday at the communal farm which is run by the nonprofit Gather New Haven.

Inside a new fast-food Puerto Rican restaurant on Whalley, Chef Raul Santiago combines richly seasoned pork fried rice, pinto beans, and oven-marinated pork onto a plate. He then tops the entire dish off with a large serving of sweet plantains.

9 Berry Pies Vie For Prize

Any way you slice it, the competition was fierce Monday at Westville’s annual Hi-Fi” pie-baking contest outside Mitchell Library.

The youngest competitor, 12-year-old Vivian Balazs faced up against a returning champion’s mixed-berry pie, her brother’s ombre berry delight, and six other delectable creations.

In the end, Balazs’ Blackberry Pie with a Lattice top” took the winning prize — a $50 gift card to the Devil’s Diet dessert bar.

The Huneebee Project — a regional beekeeping project maintains beehives in a community garden on Arthur Street in the Hill — was part of the experience tours connected to the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, which runs through June 27

For those who participated in the visit to the Huneebee Project Saturday and Sunday, it was a fascinating dive into bee biology, plant sex, and the big wonders that can come from small green spaces in a city.
