The full Board of Alders is scheduled to vote Monday night on a controversial proposal to build a skate park in Scantlebury Park, following a packed public hearing on the idea.
Wendy Garcia’s husband cringes whenever she takes the kids to Lighthouse Point Park’s beach.
She hopes he won’t cringe any longer when she shows him a new report that gave the waters around New Haven’s most popular ocean swimming spot an excellent grade for water quality as pertains to human health.

It’s been five years since Doreen Abubakar (pictured above left) started creating a greenspace at the corner of Hazel Street and Shelton Avenue in Newhallville. She was joined there Thursday evening by other green-minded New Haveners who celebrated a quarter-century of working together creating similar oases in spots throughout the city.

Nearly 100 people showed their support Sunday at a groundbreaking fpr the New Haven Botanical Garden of Healing Dedicated to Victims of Gun Violence, a citywide effort to raise awareness of the plaguing epidemic of gun violence in New Haven.
Some 2,000 new daffodils are being planted. Ground lights will illuminate the trees. A “friends” group is conducting regular clean-ups. Weekly musical performances are beginning next week, leading into a parade of summer festivals.
Hamden police arrested a 47-year-old New Haven man and a 42-year-old North Haven man for allegedly stealing $200,000 worth of lead-covered copper flashing from Edgerton Park.

Springing for two new tree trimmers and a foreman would help the parks department respond to all 2,300 annual trimming and removal requests and to start chipping away at the city’s tree-request backlog.
People got to learn Sunday, during the Historic Wooster Square 46th Cherry Blossom Festival, that “life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.”

At 11 a.m. on Saturday in College Woods Park, the bikers had already hit the streets, but the stage was set for their return.
The food trucks were parked at the basketball court. At the grandstand, two sound technicians were putting the finishing touches on the sound system. Representatives from a dozen local organizations had set up their booths.
The only missing ingredient: about 1,000 cyclists.
Starting from West Rock Park at different times in the morning, they were riding anywhere from 5 to 40 miles to descend on East Rock pretty much all at once. It was for fun and exercise. It was also to raise funds for environmental causes, centered around Earth Day.
