Teacher Trades Pencil For Revolutionary Sword

At 8 a.m., Rosalie McAllen was poring over an exam to get certified as a Connecticut state high school history teacher. 

By noon she was stepping into history, bearing not a pencil but an officer’s sword no less. She was transformed into Lt. Rosalie McAllen of Peck’s Company Revolutionary War-era militia.

From West To East, They “Rocked”

April Merleaux put on a bicycle-print dress, strapped her son Leo into the passenger seat, and set off for the East.

She and her husband Derek (pictured) were among nearly 300 cyclists who pedaled from West Rock to East Rock Saturday for the second annual Rock to Rock festival.

The day began with cheese grits and eggs at Common Ground, an environment-themed charter school at the base of West Rock.

Aldermen Hesitate on Lighthouse Booze Ban

Alderman Roland Lemar enjoys an occasional bottle of wine with his wife at Lighthouse Point Park. He called it inappropriate” to ban booze there and have officers handing out tickets to couples and families relaxing the same way he does.

To East Shore neighbors and police, on the other hand, a few rowdy partiers are ruining the fun for everyone. They advocated a ban on all beer and wine, if it will help the police fight crime. They argued that police can use their discretion to root out the disruptive drinkers from the responsible ones.

Bicycle Rack With A View

nhihalloween%20010.JPGThe parks department is in the process of installing 24 new bicycle racks throughout the city’s parks.

One of the most recent spots is scenic Quinnipiac River Park, where the concrete pad was poured this past weekend. The bolting down of the rack is due shortly. It could not have come soon enough for some Fair Haveners.
