On the way to the dog park one recent afternoon, I watched a speeding car hit a highway barrier and spin in a 360-degree revolution. The driver, one of many daft people at the wheel of late, managed to total only his sedan and not any eyewitnesses. Then he crept off to the exit on his rims, smoke billowing from the hood, and succeeded in reminding all of us how close we come every day to profound misfortune

An overgrown Newhallville lot might become a playground, with springing bumblebee seats, a log-shaped tunnel, and mushroom stepping stones.

But when the city presented these plans to the neighbors, parents and grandparents balked. The park looks well-designed, they said, but would their children be safe?

Fourteen-year-old Jaden Lee snapped the tail of his skateboard, slid his foot forward, and jumped all at once.

Jaden received those three tips on how to do his first Ollie” from a visiting U.S. ambassador” who came to town to spread the word about not just how to skateboard, but why it matters, as New Haven also opened a new park for the faithful.

Napoleon Jenkins jumped from the gleaming bars of the jungle gym, his feet landing on the spongy surface of the Goffe Street Park playground with a soft thud.

It’s pretty good,” said the 8‑year-old, grinning, testing out the new surface, one of a host of improvements at the park.

Newly minted Dwight/Beaver Hills top cop Lt. Ryan Przybylski.

Newhallville, East Rock and Cedar Hill have a new neighborhood top cop — Lt. Dana Smith, who has stepped into the district manager role as Lt. Manmeet Colon moves over to Internal Affairs.

And a little further west in Dwight and Beaver Hills, Lt. Ryan Przybylski has risen to the role of district manager, replacing recently promoted Capt. John Healy.

Criscuolo Park Swings Into Next Phase Of Upgrades

Criscuolo Park splash pad getting use this summer.

Back in 2017 Fair Haven neighbors, parents, and activists advocated to upgrade scenic Criscuolo Park in Fair Haven with a boat launch and maybe even a climbing wall.

They didn’t get those, but they did receive reconfigured and relocated play areas for little and big kids and a spiffy new splash pad.

Now more improvements — new swings and perhaps permanent tables for dominoes and chess — are on the way.

Tree Dedicated As “Symbol of Hope and Resilience” In Quest To End Domestic Violence

Drizzly raindrops trickled down the leaves and were soaked up by the roots of an American chestnut tree that now stands in Fair Haven’s Quinnipiac River Park for victims of domestic violence.
