9 Garages Collapse

Nine garages collapsed in New Haven from the ice/snow storm of the past two days, and the city condemned a flat-roofed eight-unit apartment building.

So reported city Building Official Andy Rizzo Thursday evening.

He said the city’s building department responded to 20 calls about potentially precarious roofs, including ones at a Yale-New Haven Hospital outpatient clinic and Lowe’s home improvement store on Route 80.

A woman walking through saw something she thought was wrong” at Lowe’s, Rizzo said. I sent an inspector out. They are well on top of everything.”

The condemned apartment building is at 479 Elm. St. and is owned by Kensington Square Ltd. Partnership, Rizzo said.

He said he expects more problems from tired” roofs carrying heavy loads of snow and ice. He urged people worried that roofs might collapse to call 203 – 946-6316.
