In one week, 11 cars were broken into in East Rock and 47 in Wooster Square.
That’s a huge uptick in car break-ins, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery.
SeeClickFix, the community non-emergency complaint site, is abuzz with talk of break-ins. Three days ago, SeeClickFix user Erasmus opened a discussion entitled “Rash of Car Break-Ins, Wooster Square.” Erasmus wrote that at least eight cars were broken into with crow bars on Friday morning. It was the latest in “countless” cars that have been hit in the last three weeks, Erasmus wrote.
The SeeClickFix posting was viewed 495 times and received 46 votes as of Monday afternoon.
Ben Berkowitz, founder of SeeClickFix, said New Haven car break-in complaints are popping up all over the site.
According to an email from the Dowtown/Wooster Square Community Management Team, police suspect that people behind the crimes are traveling the neighborhood by car.
The Community Management Team will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall. An emergency meeting of the Wooster Square Watch is in the works for Thursday.
