Classic Cars: Up Close and Personal

Branford Rotary Club’s First Annual Classic Car Show on Sunday drew about 130 auto aficionados, who put their spit and polished vehicles on display at Van Wilgen’s Garden Center in North Branford.

A couple of hundred admirers strolled among the rows, no doubt reminiscing about vehicles of their youth. Youngsters got a glimpse of the cars driven by their grandparents (and great-grandparents).

For anyone who remembers when cars sported chrome bumpers and trim, there was plenty of flashing in the bright late summer sun.

According to Rotary Club President David Chew, the Best in Show went to a 1940 Cadillac LaSalle. The event served as a fundraiser for various Rotary charities including the Branford Counseling Center Basic Needs Program, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Connecticut, and U.S. Marine Justin Eldridge Children’s Education Fund.

Rotarian Bill Van Wilgen hosted the event at the garden center and local business owner and car enthusiast Ted Aub provided his expertise in organizing the show. Aub runs numerous car shows in the area, including the Branford Festival Car Show.

This writer’s favorite? The 1956 yellow-green and black Chevy convertible with its perfectly coordinated interior and green fuzzy dice. ( See top photo, too.)
