The New Haven County Cutters were unable to get a needed timely hit, as they fell to the Sussex Skyhawks 6 – 4 in 10 innings at Historic Yale Field, but they’ve recovered from a slow season start.
Wednesday night’s game capped an otherwise victorious series
The Cutters won the first game of the three-game series 2 – 0 in a rain-shortened game on Monday. Starter Ryan Bonesio (2 – 1) pitched five shutout innings for the victory. Shortstop Chas Terni gave the Cutters the lead in the first innings with a two-out rbi single.
On Tuesday, Joslin Ramirez gave the Cutters five innings and allowed three runs in the no decision. Terni went 2 – 2 with two rbi in the contest to lead the Cutters to victory. Terni is batting .413 (12 – 29) over his last nine games and is hitting .319 on the season.
In Wednesday night’s game, Starter Jeff Farrell pitched 5.1 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on four hits and got the no decision.
“He did a good job, battled,” said Manager Mike Church. “He’s not going to overpower hitters and he can’t get behind hitters.”
While leading 2 – 1 in the top of the 6th, LHP Mike Joyce came in to relieve Farrell and allowed the tying run when third baseman Junior Zamora couldn’t handle a high chopper. The Skyhawks would tack on two more runs to make it a 4 – 2 lead.
In the 8th inning, the Cutters rallied back as both Zamora and right fielder Jeremy Pickrel delivered rbi singles to tie the game at four. However, Terni was doubled off at second on a line drive to center field to end a possible big inning for the Cutters. The Cutter’s never threatened again.
In the top of the 10th inning, RHP Andy Weimer surrendered two runs as the Cutters went on to lose.
Now 7 – 13, the Cutters have won five of their last 10 games.
“We’re getting better,” said Church. “We need to start pitching a little better and get more timely hitting.”
