Firefighters spent an hour and a half Sunday evening extinguishing a fire at a commercial bakery on Grand Avenue.
The single-alarm fire started around 6 p.m. in an oven, then extended to the exterior of the building, according to Assistant Fire Chief Ralph Black.
All the workers inside made it out safely, he said. They worked in a bakery tucked between Ferraro’s supermarket and I‑91. Lender’s used to own it; it is now called the Something Sweet Bakery.
Some 32 firefighters participated in knocking down the fire, Black said. They quickly extinguished the main part, but “we had to check to where it had spread in the duct work.” He estimated the size of the oven at about 100 feet by 20 feet.
Black said one firefighter, whom he didn’t identify, injured his shoulder. He said the blaze did damage to some of the building’s duct work and ventilation system for the oven.

A Shooting An Hour Earlier
Earlier on Sunday, someone shot at a man at the Farnam Courts housing project directly across the street from the bakery.
The shooter and the victim got into an apparent argument, and the shooter fired twice from close range, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman. He shot in the direction of a playground. The shooter, who’s bald and 29 years old, rode away on a bicycle. Police have his name and are looking for him. The victim went to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment. He was in critical but stable condition, according to Hartman.
