An experiment in bringing downtown’s G Cafe to Dixwell has ended.
A 600-square-foot to-go Ashmun Street outpost of the downtown bakery/restaurant, which is connected to New Haven’s popular Whole G bakery, has closed its doors. The location seemed to be just a few too steps too far from Science Park to capitalize on food traffic.
The bakery opened last September as part of an eight-unit apartment complex built by developer Juan Salas-Romer on previously abandoned property.
Salas-Romer said he’s hopeful about landing a new tenant in the commercial space, the site of the old Cardinals Cafe nightclub. If another food operation locates there, he suggested, it should aim to develop a catering business at the Science Park complex a block away. With the opening of Ricky D’s Rib Shack right in Science Park itself, and the success of Winchester Loft apartments, the area is on the move, he noted.
He has succeeded in renting all eight apartments at his complex, he said. Six are occupied; he’s waiting for a certificate of occupancy to move tenants into the last two units, at the site of an abandoned former church.
