Say “New Haven,” and what other communities come to mind? This door, to a boutique that opened on Chapel Street Friday, suggests that we’re keeping some new company.
The window looks into Tailor New York, a clothing store near Chapel Street at 46 High St. and aimed at young preppy females. Richard Rosenthal cut the ribbon for the store at a ceremony Friday. He and his wife Joy have opened three previous incarnations of the store in the past 15 months — ”-in Southampton, Palm Beach and South Norwalk. Just as the door says.
“Look at the names,” Chamber of Commerce prez Anthony Rescigno marveled at the ceremony Friday. “It’s great to be part of that list!”
Rosenthal describes the store’s philosophy as taking pretty conventional duds (pinstripes, seersucker) and “making it fun, young and girlie.” He acknowledges New Haven’s “out of our norm,” given his other locations. But he says he figured, “We’re truly preppy. Let’s brand it. J. Crew and Urban are here. I figured it should fit.” If so, if he can get college-aged customers used to his brand, he envisions opening stores in Princeton, Cambridge and Georgetown.
Don’t feel left out, preppy guys. Rosenthal plans to add men’s clothing to his New Haven boutique some time next year.
