(Updated: 3:23 p.m.) Some 3,100 customers lost power in New Haven Monday after an accident involving a United Illuminating (UI) employee.
The accident occurred around 11:45 a.m. in the Broadway area [correction], according to UI spokesman Ed Crowder.
A UI worker was involved in an accident there and went to the hospital to be treated for injuries, Crowder said. UI didn’t have more details to release yet about the identity of the worker, the cause of the accident, or the extent of injuries. A crew was there with a bucket truck doing maintenance on a line.
Crowder said UI had the all power back on by 1 p.m.
The outage hit about 40 percent of the city, according to city Chief Administrative Officer Rob Smuts.
Cops were directing traffic at major intersections as the signs went out, and schools were without power, in the Hill and parts of Beaver Hill, Edgewood, Newhallville, Dixwell, and West River.
Smuts said the city considered whether to send students home from schools without power. But when officials learned the power would probably be back on by 1 p.m., they decided to keep classes going.
The fire department was on watch for any problems that might result from the outage, but none were reported as of 12:30. A traffic accident at Derby and Ella Grasso Boulevard was believed to be related to the outage.
