Two crashes occurred Wednesday morning involving school buses.

A bus transporting magnet school students collided with a car Wednesday morning, sending four people to the hospital.

The crash occurred at the corner of Lakeview and Benham streets in Hamden, according to a release from Assistant Fire Chief Charles Lubowicki. The bus was transporting four students to New Haven Academy in New Haven.

Four people — both drivers, and two bus passengers — went to the hospital for treatment of injuries. Three car passengers refused medical treatment” and two students on the bus were released to their parents on scene,” according to the release.

Hamden police are investigating the collision.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that the operator of the school bus was stopped, waiting to turn left onto Lakeview Avenue. A second vehicle, which was operated by a 30 year-old Hamden resident, was traveling eastbound on Benham Street. The operator of the second vehicle lost control of his vehicle on the wet roadway.’ The driver’s side of the vehicle struck the front of the school bus,” Hamden police Capt. Ronald Smith reported in a subsequent release Wednesday.

The 30 year-old Hamden resident sustained serious injuries to his leg and hip. He was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital by American Medical Response.”

A separate crash occurred at Hubinger Street and West Park Avenue Wednesday at 9:23 a.m., according to New Haven police spokeswoman Sgt. Shayna Kendall. An SUV collided with a school bus with 20-plus occupants and [the driver] left the scene,” she said; no one was hurt.
