Now that the town has looked at various options for redevelopment in the area around Branford Shoreline East Train Station, a public hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fire Headquarters, 45 N. Main St. Residents, property owners, and other stakeholders are encouraged to attend the meeting and provide feedback.
Called Transit Oriented Development (TOD), the project is designed to take advantage of sites – existing and proposed – close to transit services. It includes, and would build upon projects such as Atlantic Wharf, Anchor Reef, and the Stony Creek Brewery.

Editor’s Note: The Eagle recently interviewed the candidates for first selectman, Jamie Cosgrove, the current Republican first selectman, and Lynda Mollow, the Democratic nominee, for their views on a variety of subjects. We interviewed them separately and asked each the same set of questions. The Mollow interview will be published Tuesday. The election takes place Tuesday, Nov. 7.
First Selectman Jamie Cosgrove hopes his four-year record will resonate with voters when they go to the polls.
Cosgrove, 44, a Republican, is seeking his third two-year term, running again with incumbent Selectman Joe Higgins Jr., a retired New York City fire official.

The First Amendment is short, but powerful: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
The Shoreline League of Democratic Women (SLDW), whose membership extends from Branford to Old Lyme and north to Killingworth, hosted a forum at the Guilford Free Library this month that focused on three different aspects of the amendment.

The Branford field hockey team has made it a habit of winning the past several years. Last season the young Hornets won 19 games and made it to the state championship game before falling to perennial power New Canaan 1 – 0.
Branford’s Hall of Fame coach Cathy McGuirk said after that game, “Don’t hang your head. You played a very good team tonight and you played very hard. I’m very proud of you.”

Nine years ago, Attorney Michael Koskoff, a senior partner at Koskoff, Koskoff & Bieder in Bridgeport and New Haven, and a lawyer who spends most of his time litigating personal injury cases that result in million dollar plus verdicts, turned to writing a screen play. Not all the time, of course.
Eventually he called upon his son, Jacob, who lives in Los Angeles and writes screenplays, to join the project and together they wrote and finished “Marshall.” Now, the national premiere of the film is set for this Friday, Oct. 13, in theaters across Connecticut and the nation. Here is the trailer.

Thanks to a recent grant, the Walsh Intermediate School Based Health Center will be working with Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) to open 45 minutes before school starts in order to extend current service time to meet the needs of families who may have urgent care needs, are enrolled in the school based health center and are need of services. The new extended hours program begins Nov. 1.
Walsh was selected by the Connecticut Health Foundation, the state’s largest independent health philanthropy, to receive a $25,000 grant that is designed to avoid or reduce school absences and to keep kids out of emergency rooms. Walsh enrolls 916 students in grades five to eight. This is a school based health clinic that is partially funded by the Department of Public Health and YNHH.

Branford’s clergy led a vigil on the Town Green last Thursday where Rev. Bill Keane (center) proclaimed that “as far as I am concerned, today we are the first church of Las Vegas, Nevada.”
Rev. Keane, the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Branford, told some 45 residents and firefighters who gathered at Town Hall for a candlelight vigil that he wanted to hold this service to “share our thoughts, a moment of silence and a short prayer from each of us.” Five ministers representing a variety of churches in town joined him on the steps of Town Hall for the 25-minute ceremony.

The Housing Authority is hoping to “seize the moment” and have a public hearing for the new Parkside Village 1 affordable housing project before the November 1 deadline to apply for federal funding.
The Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission agreed last night to set the hearing Oct. 19 — but the issue is whether the the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) will have time to comment before then. Since the 5.7 acre housing site is in the coastal boundary area, the DEEP has to be notified 35 days ahead in case they want to comment. The applications were referred to DEEP Sept 27.

A very diverse collection of cool events this week. There are lots you can do to support favorite causes – the newly formed Ben Callahan Foundation, MADD, Branford Compassion Club. Art and music play a big role, too. Drop in at the Blackstone to learn about honey bees, check out Jen Payne’s new book at the Martha Link Walsh Gallery, and raise a stein in celebration of fall at the Stony Creek Brewery. Got a cool event? Email sebahner@snet.net by Wednesday noon.

The animals were aware indeed on Sunday at the Branford Compassion Club’s Animal Awareness Day. The green was alive with critters of all kind – dogs and cats, of course, along with mini horses, goats, guinea pigs, and even turtles. Overall, the animals were quiet, standing in line, awaiting their turn.
The beautiful day drew hundreds, as the green was shared by the Friends of the Blackstone Library, which was holding its annual book sale, and the Trinity Church Fair.

The Board of Finance (BOF) heaped praise on the town’s finance director at its meeting last month for helping Branford again achieve a coveted Triple A Rating, an honor that first began when Unk DaRos was first selectman in 2009.
The rating is the best a town can receive from Standard & Poor’s (S&P), the rating agency. At the time Branford was first awarded a Triple A rating, DaRos said, “We’ve been doing this a long time and the credit goes to Jim Finch, his department, and the Board of Finance.”
The current first selectman Jamie Cosgrove would agree.

A study of the half-mile radius around Branford’s train station shows areas that may be prime for development in the next decade— including Meadow Street, the electric substation site, Branford Landing, and the Anchor Reef complex.
“All of these things, in one way or another, may be in play in the next 10 years. We’re looking at those different development possibilities,” said Frank Fish, a founding principal of BFJ Planning of Stamford.
