As we say good-by to summer, even though recent days have indeed been summer-like, we think of a special annual event, Short Beach Days, three days of pure fun for kids of all ages. This was year 71 in the history of the event, one that began in 1946, one year after World War II ended.
Julia Rusatsky, an actress and a photographer, loves Short Beach Days. She grew up in Short Beach in the 1990s, graduated from Branford High, and each year returns for this special weekend. She especially loves the sand sculpture contest. As a kid, she learned the joy of sand art and participated in many of the weekend competitions, including the Lip Sync and the Labor Day parade.

The streak came to a close on Friday with a one-goal loss to Jonathan Law (3 – 2) and was followed by a tough 6 – 0 defeat to rival Hand on Monday at the Surf Club in Madison.

Explore someplace new this weekend. On Saturday, the North Branford Women’s Club is hosting a hike around Lake Gaillard, a treasure tucked away in North Branford. The public is seldom allowed into this property owned by the Regional Water Authority, so here is a unique opportunity. As always, the Branford Green is the place to be this weekend, with the Friends of Library Book Sale (you can never have too many books), the Trinity Church Fair, and Animal Awareness Day, highlighted by the Blessing of the Animals. What better way to honor our beloved pets?

The new volleyball coach at Branford High is only a few years older than some of the players on the high school team. And for her that’s a plus.
Cody Michaels, 22, was graduated from Quinnipiac University this past June where she majored in Health Science Studies. A former All City First Team honoree and All Tournament player in high school, Michaels played volleyball for the Division I Bobcats and coach Kris Czaplinski. Here the coach smiles at Marisa Minore after winning a point.

To a packed hall on Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Guilford, Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (D‑3rd Dist.) addressed the challenges of the Trump administration, 10 months after the presidential election.
Her appearance was part of the Fall Kick-Off Meeting of Connecticut Shoreline Indivisible (CTSI), one of many grassroots organizations that formed in response to the 2016 election using the Indivisible Guide as its action plan.

Looking to get their first win of the season the Branford Hornets girls’ soccer team came up short losing 2 – 1 on a header by Sheehan’s Samantha Larkin that evaded goaltender Nina Grabowiecki with a minute left to play in the game.
The low-scoring game finished 1 – 0 at the half with Sheehan leading. Branford tied it up when co-captain Taylor Brown {pictured) scored with 10 minutes left.

The state Democratic leadership is incensed that Branford’s longtime state Rep. Lonnie Reed and four other House Dems voted to send a Republican version of a new state budget out of the House and to the office of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. Three breakaway Senate Democrats also enabled the Republican version of the budget.
“Despite an abundance of bullying and threats, I refused to leave the Capitol at 5 a.m. without a budget,” Reed told the Eagle. And the Republican budget, she said, was the only option available. Plus it was much better for Branford than the failed Democratic amendment, she said. As it turned out the Democrats never got their amendments called in the Senate because they did not have the votes.
The last time Parneeta Sidhu (pictured) saw Lishan Wang, he was shooting a gun, first at her husband, Dr. Vanjinder Toor, and then at her. That was more than seven years ago. The encounter was swift and traumatic. It upended her life.
Friday she made her first appearance in New Haven’s state Superior Court where she watched as Wang, her husband’s killer, was sentenced to 32 years in prison. Overall, this case that has rattled the criminal justice system.

Fall has officially arrived, but the warmth of summer is lingering. Tag sales, book sales, bike tourneys, and artwork for all tastes can all be found within the borders of our town. If the activist in you has been raised, check out Connecticut Shoreline Indivisible’s fall kick-off meeting with Rosa DeLauro (and be sure that you are registered to vote regardless of your political leanings). Looking ahead, round up your pups and kitties for Branford Compassion Club’s Animal Awareness Day with the Blessing of the Animals as its highlight. Need more ideas for activities? Read on!

Call it the “feel good” meeting.
The Board of Education at its meeting Sept. 13 voted to rename the Branford High School Auditorium in honor of newly retired music director, Cathyann Rodding. The board also acknowledged John Prins’s Master Level designation for the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE), welcomed several new certified teachers to the district and set the salary for its superintendent.

Two retail buildings are being proposed for a vacant 14-acre lot at 250 N. Main St. Since the project would impact wetlands, a two-hour public hearing was held Thursday before the Inland Wetlands Commission (IWC), and will continue Oct. 12.
The site is located between Route 1 and I‑95, and is adjacent to the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home on one side; and United Tire Inc. and Greystone Manor condominiums on the other side.

Ahead of Hurricane Harvey, and subsequently Hurricane Irma, (and now there’s Jose and maybe Maria), I mentally checked off what I needed to do to evacuate with my two cats. Much of their stuff is in the family room, so that’s where I started.
Two large carriers with comfy blankets at the ready. Check.

A big weekend along the shoreline! The Guilford Fair, a perennial favorite, kicks off the agricultural fair season. Every area of the state has its signature events, featuring midways, entertainment, baking contests, horse and oxen pulls, rides, and, of course, food. Kids with guitars (and drums and more) can strut their stuff on the green tonight and aim for stardom, while plant lovers and families stake their claim on Saturday and Sunday. Paddle your canoe (or kayak) along the Branford River and get a glimpse of Broadway as well. Read on! There’s more.
