Saying it was time for new leadership” for Branford, Lynda Mollow, a member of the Representative Town Meeting (RTM), accepted the Democratic nomination for first selectwoman Thursday night. Incumbent selectman Jack Ahern was at her side as they both pledged to work for change in Branford.

I believe it is time for new leadership in our town,” she told the caucus of about 125 people who gathered at the Canoe Brook Senior Center Thursday night. In addition to new leadership we need someone at the helm with a new vision,” she said. Mollow, 49 and a nurse, has served on the RTM for the past two years.

Proposed Roundabout.

Residents attending an information session about a proposed roundabout for Main Street seemed intrigued by the idea. The new configuration on the western side of the Town Center would eliminate confusing intersections at Main, South Main, Eades and Laurel streets and would also address traffic issues on Cedar Street near the Blackstone Library.

Diana Stricker Photo

Several of the 40 people attending the meeting Thursday night at the firehouse community room asked questions or voiced support for the plans, while a few opposed the idea.

Traffic circulation and the effect of the construction process on the students and neighborhood were among the hot button topics raised at a recent Planning and Zoning Commission (P & Z) public hearing as it heard plans for the renovation of the Walsh Intermediate School.

The details of the structure – both interior and exterior – have been discussed at length at meetings of the Board of Education and the Public Building Commission, and approvals have been granted by the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Inland Wetlands Commission. However, the July 6 meeting of the P & Z brought to light concerns about traffic flow, both during the construction process and once the project is completed. Walsh students will be attending school during the construction process, although the school calendar has been adjusted for earlier summer closing to accommodate the demolition and construction process. Jeanette Harris jams on one of the group’s tunes.

The Branford Green became electric on a recent Thursday night when Jay Rowe of Milford, well-known and popular keys player, teamed up with the exciting and passionate saxophonist Jeanette Harris of Fresno, California, in a sort of an East meets West” hot jazz performance.

Rowe {pictured) is somewhat of a regular at the Branford Jazz Series, performing with his own group or as part of other guest artists groups. In either case, he’s well received every time he’s in town and has a group of followers that are always here when he performs.

Brick by brick, the dilapidated Atlantic Wire factory buildings are coming down. Their demolition will make way for the upscale Atlantic Wharf residential and retail complex along the Branford river in the heart of town.

The smaller structures are being demolished first, and the larger buildings along Meadow Street will be the final ones, according to a demolition schedule filed at Branford’s building department. Some of the initial work was done by hand, but the remainder will be done mechanically.
