They called him a talented player who played like a true warrior.” And they were devastated this weekend to report to their community that Ben, their warrior, had died Friday afternoon in a tragic accident on the Branford River.

Historian Timothy Snyder

It is a Friday night in the upscale seaside town of Guilford; it is a warm evening, the kind of evening when the audience gathered to hear the speaker might be on their boats or going out to dinner or fixing a barbeque at the start of the weekend.

Instead some 150 people are at the Guilford Community Center where they await a talk by Timothy Snyder, the author of On Tyranny,” a book he wrote after Donald Trump was elected president in 2016. Snyder teaches history at Yale University.

About 1 mile from the Branford-Guilford line

State Rep. Sean Scanlon (D‑Guilford and Branford) says a projected federal plan to build four railroad tracks in a dense historical district connecting Branford and Guilford is decades away, if at all. That’s the good news, he says.

The bad news is the attitude taken by top officials at the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) in refusing to hear the concerns of the area’s elected officials as well as its residents. They have gathered at meetings in the last month to learn from others about the project.
