UPDATED — The Branford green was packed with friends and strangers tonight paying tribute to 10-year-old Ben Callahan, who died after falling into the Branford River Friday and being sucked into a culvert. Speakers from all aspects of his life described his “peaceful warrior” nature, love of sports and music, and his devotion to his family and church. It was an experience that truly united the town and it drew to a close as the sun set.
Amid a crowd of close to two thousand people, coaches and teachers and friends and family took to the stage to describe an extraordinary boy who touched the lives of many and was primed to be a leader.

Ben Callahan, just 10 years old when he died, was an outstanding athlete, a kid who loved to play football, basketball, and lacrosse. His coaches said he “pushed himself to the max in each sport and would often wear his heart on his sleeve.”
They called him a talented player who played like “a true warrior.” And they were devastated this weekend to report to their community that Ben, their warrior, had died Friday afternoon in a tragic accident on the Branford River.

If the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) agrees, about 20 town buildings, including the high school, the elementary schools, Town Hall, the police building, the transfer station, and the water pollution facility, will receive an energy makeover. The makeover is designed to reduce energy costs and consumption and to save the town money by devising a new energy budget.
The largest price tag will be the schools because they have the greatest square footage, Aldo Mazzaferro, director of project development for the ECG Group, told the Eagle in an interview. Mazzaferro serves as the Owner’s Representative for all members of the Connecticut Council of Municipalities. The CCM has endorsed this program for cities and towns throughout the state.

Police Capt. Geoff Morgan and Fire Chief Tom Mahoney announced yesterday that the body of a 10-year-old boy, reported missing along the Branford River, has been found. The initial call was tweeted by the Branford Fire Department around 1 p.m.; the boy’s body was found about 50 yards away from shore by divers around 4 p.m.
The boy, whose identity has not been disclosed, was playing along the Branford River along Tabor Drive/South Montowese Street with his two brothers and, according to officials, lost his footing and was “sucked into a culvert.” His brothers, one older, one younger, tried to help him. He was found by the Guilford dive team in the initial search area, although the search extended along the Branford River toward Indian Neck.

In a unanimous vote, the Board of Selectmen (BOS) last night approved a four-way legal settlement, which, with a judge’s approval, will enable the Legacy Theatre to open for business in Stony Creek.
The agreement includes a stipulation that gives the theater and certain residents exclusive use of seven parking spaces on Thimble Island Road when the theater is in operation about 150 days a year.

The Branford 11-year-old all stars evened their divisional playoff record to 1 – 1 with a 8 – 4 win at home against the Hamden all stars at Sliney Field on Friday evening.
“That was an important win for us,” said coach Jake Palluzzi after the game. “We lost to a very good Orange team the other night and didn’t want to get down 0 – 2 like we did last year.” Palluzzi was referring to his 10-year-old all-star team from last season that started out 0 – 2 in the Divisional Playoffs before running off three straight wins to qualify for the District Playoffs.

The Branford Jazz on the Green Series kicked off Thursday night, featuring a band known as “The Recess Bureau,” a group of nine talented musicians who play jazz their way. All attended Western Connecticut State University in Danbury where they pursued their interest in jazz.
Before an audience of about 700 on the town green, the group opened up their first set with their own tune, one named “Bad Actor,” followed by “Vermin Supreme.” Four other songs from the first set were from their 2016 self-titled album — “‘Grab the Hotsauce,” “The Great Moose,” “Council of the Pigs” and “Nocturn.” They performed two sets of nine songs, ending their performance at about 8:30 p.m.

It is a Friday night in the upscale seaside town of Guilford; it is a warm evening, the kind of evening when the audience gathered to hear the speaker might be on their boats or going out to dinner or fixing a barbeque at the start of the weekend.

State Rep. Sean Scanlon (D‑Guilford and Branford) says a projected federal plan to build four railroad tracks in a dense historical district connecting Branford and Guilford is decades away, if at all. That’s the good news, he says.
The bad news is the attitude taken by top officials at the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) in refusing to hear the concerns of the area’s elected officials as well as its residents. They have gathered at meetings in the last month to learn from others about the project.

The Board of Education (BOE) voted to extend the contract of School Superintendent Hamlet Hernandez by one year last week. The decision was made in executive session on Wednesday, June 21.
In Connecticut, school superintendents are hired for a maximum of three years, as was the case when Hernandez was first hired in 2010; the school year runs from July to July.

A color palette and textures inspired by walks along the Stony Creek Trails and the Stony Creek Quarry along with views of Thimble Islands will serve as the inspiration for the interior of the $88.2 million renovation of the Walsh Intermediate School.
The interior design team from Antinozzi Associates presented a set of plans showing the new design to the Public Building Commission recently. The commission met again last week to review the school’s design development budget and authorized Antinozzi Associates to move on to the construction document phase of the project.
