The following was submitted by Petisia M. Adger, president of the Elm City Freddy Fixer Parade Committee Inc. (ECFFPC).
The 55th Freddy Fixer Parade will be held Sunday, June 2 at 1:30 p.m. and its theme is “Our Village Legacy — #freddyweekend.”
Led by this year’s notable (instutiional) grand marshal, the Connecticut Center for Arts & Technology (CONNCAT), the parade route begins in New Haven at the intersection of Bassett Street and Dixwell Avenue and ends at the intersection of Dixwell and Lake Place.
To date, eighty (80) marching units have registered to march including the Ebony Horsewoman, Hillhouse High School Marching Band, and Hamden Dance Academy. James Hillhouse High School Principal, Glen Worthy, and WNHC New Haven’s Morning Show Co-Host & Program Director, Darryl Huckaby, will serve as the distinguished parade judges. Parade Day Registration tables and location are sponsored by Visels Pharmacy (714 Dixwell Ave.) and grandstand personalities include returning Master of Ceremonies Majesty and DJ Shawn Woo.
Moreover, ECFFPC will collaborate with the International Festival of Arts & Ideas to present its 2nd Dixwell Freddy Fixer Neighborhood Festival at Scantlebury Park on Saturday, June 1 from noon‑5 p.m. This free festival will showcase staged performances and various cultural, educational and hobbyist interests stationed around this venue located at 139 Ashmun St.
One of the underlying goals of ECFFPC is to bring people together, of all walks of life, in one place to increase international understanding, social cohesion, and celebrate diversity. We believe that by showcasing the talents and passions of our parade participants in this historical context, we can facilitate an open exchange of ideas amongst the spectators and the participating members of the marching units. It is these latter interactions that provide greater cultural awareness in understanding the role performance arts play in our culture and encourages the preservation of the African-American heritage and legacy.
Viewed futuristically, purposely securing our village legacy through this consistent, constructive and harmonious display of our cultural norms will be the impetus that constructs the story of our history we want to be told for many centuries to come.
Elm City Freddy Fixer Parade Committee is a non-profit organization incorporated in the State of Connecticut and federally recognized as a 501(c)(3) entity as of December 27, 2016. For more information, please visit our website here.
Accordingly, the parade and festival provide such a platform for cultural expression through visual and performance arts. It is our continued hope that members of the Greater New Haven community share in our vision and embrace this year-round grassroots effort by supporting the following scheduled Elm City Freddy Fixer Parade events in the City of New Haven:
