Steelers Saluted

They didn’t win the national championships, but they did get a standing ovation and official citations from the Board of Aldermen Monday night.

After their recent return from the national finals in Florida, New Haven’s traveling Pee Wee Steelers showed up in the aldermanic chamber at City Hall on Monday. The team was officially recognized by the board for its athletic achievements.

Newhallville Alderman Charles Blango presided over the occasion. These will be our doctors, our lawyers, our teachers,” he said of the team members.

Steelers President Reginald Lytle (pictured) offered a presentation of his own, a plaque of appreciation for Blango and fellow Newhallville Alderwoman Alfreda Edwards, who he said have been essential to the success of his football program. They’re numbers one and two on his phone’s speed dial, he said.

Blango, who’s leaving the board at the end of the month, asked his colleagues to continue to fund the Steelers in the future with federal Community Development Block Grants.

Look out for our babies,” he said. Make sure they get some of that CDBG money.”
