Cynthia M. Whitaker, 78

Cynthia M. Whitaker, age 78, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2022 at her home in Hamden, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Cynthia was born in New Haven on November 10, 1943, to her parents Ida Belle Truehart and Forest Whitaker. Cynthia remained a lifelong resident of Connecticut and was employed by the City of New Haven for a period of time.

Cynthia had a list of values and atop that list stood family and faith. Cynthia was adamant that the family come together and share meals. Her children recall the ritual of Sunday dinners that brought them together as a family and began each time with a prayer over their meal. Cynthia cemented these values in her grandchildren as well and ensured that they, too, recited a prayer before every meal and at bedtime.

Cynthia will be remembered in a variety of ways from diverse perspectives including, but not limited to, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend- but one thing that was consistent, regardless of relationship, was her adoration for the babies.” She absolutely loved seeing photos of the young ones and even in the final stages of her time on earth, she truly cherished the images of her babies.”

Cynthia will be missed by many and leaves behind a big hole in countless hearts. Cynthia is survived by her 6 children, Ida R.Cain, Enoch J. Cain, Sr. (Rochelle), Monique R. Cain (Aneeka), John J. Cain (Sheila), Robert L. Augustine, Jr., and Maria Augustine-Pierre (Garry); 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Cynthia was predeceased by her loving mother, Ida Belle Truehart; father, Forest Whitaker; her brother, Forest (Junior) Whitaker, Jr.; and sisters, Ruby Whitaker, Christina (Tina) Augustine, Barbara Augustine, and Sylvia Baines.
