Doris Arrington Wadley — a trailblazing retired nurse, activist, and avid bowler — passed away peacefully on Monday, September 18, 2023.
Born to Mary B. Taylor (Richardson) and Charlie C. Arrington on January 2, 1937 in Stony Creek, North Carolina, she leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and a pioneering spirit.
Doris made history when she graduated from the Medical College of Virginia, Saint Philip School of Nursing (MCV), an all-Black female nursing school, in 1959. Doris was one of the last classes to graduate from MCV, due to the progress of racial integration in educational institutions. Her commitment to healthcare was unwavering, spanning two decades of service.
She dedicated her skills and compassion to provide care to incarcerated individuals with the Connecticut Department of Correction and the Golden Manor Nursing Home, where her warmth and dedication brightened the lives of countless patients.
Beyond her professional achievements, Doris had a passion for politics and advocacy, and served as an Alternate Attendee of the 1972 Democratic National Convention. Doris also enjoyed bowling for many decades, and won several tournaments during her lifetime.
Doris joins several loved ones in eternal rest, including her daughters, Helen E. Wadley and Susan V. Williams. Doris is survived by her loving children, Mary Elizabeth Wadley and Herschel P. Wadley, Jr., who continue her legacy of strength and compassion. She also leaves to cherish her memory, a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were touched by her kindness and grace.
