Surrounded by her family and loved ones, Eva Louise Monroe Demmons, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, transitioned from this life into the eternal presence of God on Sunday, December 25, 2022.
Eva, affectionately known as “Eve,” was born to Sara and Slater Burrell on July 11, 1931, in New Haven, Connecticut. Eva attended New Haven Public Schools and then worked for over 30 years at Mite Corporation. After her retirement, she became the art teacher at the Dixwell Children’s Creative Arts Center where she was able to merge her love for the arts and children. She later started working with the New Haven Public Schools Head Start Program. She adored working with the children, teachers, and staff, and all of the students lovingly referred to her as “Grandma.”
Eva was extremely creative and had a tremendous love for the arts. Interior Design and all things related to home decor were among her favorite hobbies. You could always catch her perusing the aisles of Pier 1, TJMaxx, Homegoods, or spending a Saturday morning at an estate sale with her friends Cassandra or Sherri. Eva was also a sharp dresser, she was often called “Eva the Diva.” You would never catch her without a scarf, brooch, or an occasional popped collar.
Eva also loved sewing, painting, drawing, gardening, and jazz music. At any given time, you would walk into her home, and she would be working on a project or making something for someone else. She also had a very special place in her heart for animals, especially dogs. The family would often tell her that in her next life she was going to be a veterinarian. Over the years, Eva loved to entertain at her home, hosting dinners for family and her lifelong girlfriends, Joyce, Eleanor, Etta, Janice, Gloria, and Maryann. She was also well known for her Chocolate Cake with homemade buttercream frosting. Eva was always willing to share and do anything for her family and friends.
Eva is survived by her Daughter, Dyann Monroe; Granddaughter, Meghan Monroe; Nieces, Gail Stokes, and Karyn Stokes; Great Nieces, Dinita Stokes, Ingrid Davis, and Markita Thomas; and a host of great great nieces, nephews and friends.
Eva is predeceased by Husband, William “Bill” Demmons; Sister, Elizabeth Burrell Stokes; and Niece, Michele Stokes.
Eva also leaves Special Friends to cherish her memory, David Tyson, James Shields, Teasie Blassingame, Darius Greene; and very dear Son in law, Micheal Patterson.
We would like to give a special thanks to Toni Walker, Taylor Hyde, and the first-floor crew at Whitney Rehab; Deana, Jackie, Paulette, and Michele.
