A wake is scheduled Monday and funeral on Tuesday for George Mandelé Browne, who died on April 26.
George was born on November 15, 1972.
He was caring, kind, fun loving and passionate about people with a profound exuberance for life. He was devoted to family, friends and his chosen vocation: serving the people of New Haven with the New Haven Fire Department.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son Tavairr D. Pierce, mother Elise C. Browne, father George W. Edwards, brother Jonathan Browne, sisters Elizabeth Dickerson, Angela Browne-Edwards and beloved niece Jenaya Browne Brock as well as numerous aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and close friends. He was predeceased by a brother, Lumumba Che Farmer.
George was naturally generous, quick to lend a helping hand to those in need especially families, encouraging and mentoring youth, particularly those in single parent homes. He had a foundational role in raising his youngest niece and was concerned about young black males, advocating for them when they got into trouble.
George attended Hillhouse High School and Gateway Community College and aspired to create a purposeful life and pursued his endeavors with dedication while employed as an Assistant Teacher with New Haven Child Development Program, patient transporter at Yale New Haven Hospital, telephone installer for SNET and ultimately as Firefighter in the New Haven Fire Service, where he worked for 20 years.
George delighted in people and enjoyed exploring the natural environment, fishing, football, reading, sports, movies, playing spades, keeping pet animals, traveling and so much more. He was a member of the New Haven Firebird Society and enjoyed the camaraderie of his brethren at the job.
