On Saturday March 18, 2023, Johnny W. Edwards, Jr. was called home.
He was born on July 8, 1943 in Lyons, Georgia to the late Johnny Edwards, Sr. and Mary Wimbush-Taylor. He was raised by his loving grandparents Joseph and Emma Wimbush. After graduating from Lyons Industrial High School, Johnny moved to New Haven, Connecticut.
He worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a security guard for 35 years. During his retirement, Johnny became restless and decided to go back into the workforce as a security guard at Southern Connecticut State University where he was loved by staff, students, and faculty.
Johnny loved traveling and cruising the high seas, bowling, and going out to eat. He would always order his favorite, buffalo wings. He was also a die-hard Dallas Cowboy fan. Johnny was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a jokester and waited for the right moment to crack a joke!
At a young age Johnny established his relationship with Christ. In 2000, he joined Bethel A.M.E. Church. He enjoyed being a servant of the Lord as a head usher and trustee. Although Johnny’s health began to decline, he still made the effort to be a door keeper in the House of the Lord!
Johnny leaves to cherish his memories, a loving wife of twenty years, Leda; daughters, Debra Moultrie (Dwayne) of New Haven, CT and Janice Hunt of Lyons, GA; son, Alonzo Edwards (Sherrie) of Hamden, CT; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter, Charlene Edwards; and five siblings, Thomasina Mincey-Weekes, Joyce Ann Macrae, Karen Edwards, Herbert “Tony” Mincey, and Joseph Cobbs.
A celebration of his life will take place Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Bethel AME Church, 255 Goffe St, New Haven, CT 06511. Friends may call Wednesday at the church from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven. Services by Howard K.
