Kurt Bernard Flegler, 57

Kurt Bernard Flegler, entered into eternal rest on Monday morning, February 24th, 2020 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. A son of the late George Robert Flegler and the late Julia Hanna Flegler, was born June 21, 1962 in New Haven.

Kurt was educated in the New Haven Public School System and Williamsburg County School System when his family relocated to Hemingway, SC. Kurt was briefly employed by Wellman in Johnsonville, SC and as a DJ on Radio Baha’i 90.9 in his spare time. He lived and worked in Washington, DC for a short while and often worked with his late cousin Sylvia Woods of the famous, Sylvia’s” soul food restaurant in New York City. He was affiliated with Hopewell AME Church in Hemingway, SC and Union Temple UFWB Church in New Haven in his youth, but was converted and baptized at St. James UAME Church in New Haven.

Kurt was full of life, but struggled with Sickle Cell Disease since childhood. Imagine not feeling well most of your whole life! He would often be in pain, but would never complain. Hospital stays for weeks at a time were his norm, but still, he would say, I’m okay!” Kurt fought with everything he had, beating out the life expectancy of those with Sickle Cell Disease! He proclaimed that the King was keeping him alive and in his latter days before his health fully declined, he made it his mission to share the scriptures daily with many of his friends and love ones.

Loving memories will be cherished by his son Kurtie Flegler of Hamden; two brothers: Michael Gilliard of Florence, SC and Kevin Flegler of New Haven,; four aunts: Clara Harrison of Orangeburg, SC, Rose Cooper of Charlotte, NC, Sadie F Mack of North Charleston, SC, and Laura F LeSane of New Haven„ Two uncles: Walter Flegler Jr. of New Haven, and Frank (Joyce) Flegler of West Haven,; two nieces: Tiarra Flegler and Camryn Brooks, goddaughter Candice Dickerson and a host of other Relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

A celebration of his life will take place Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Union Temple UFW Baptist Church, 54 Platt St, New Haven, CT 06511,. Friends may call Saturday at the church from 9:00 – 11:00 AM. Interment will be private. Services by Howard K.
