Inese Richardson Gambrell
Inese Richardson Gambrell, 84 departed this life on March 4, 2008 at St. Raphael. Born August 6, 1923 to the late William Richardson and Essie Scott in Pendleton, South Carolina. She received her early education at The Anderson County Public School System in Pendleton, South Carolina. She joined Silver Springs Baptist Church in Pendleton, South Carolina at an early age. She was a faithful member until she and her husband relocated to New Haven to better their conditions. She retired from Winchester Gun Factory Unit/ US Repeating Arms.
She was a faithful member until her health began to fail. Inese had a keen sense of recognizing those who she had not seen in years. Friends would visit her in the nursing home and she would immediately recognize them and call them by name. She was clothed in her right mind until death. Inese and her daughter were the best of friends. If you saw one in the street or at a social Function, you saw the other. We say to Francis, yes miss your mother, and remember the good times you shared with her, but let her go. She is in a better place, God called I’ve joined my loved ones in God’s Domain and we’re standing side by side on a higher plain. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Francis Richardson of New Haven, CT, one sister Selena Peppers of Pendleton, South Carolina, one brother-in-law Orange C. Gambrell, one sister-in-law Genelle Johnson all of Philadelphia, PA. She was predeceased by her husband Refus Gambrell, two sisters Della Cox and Corine Richardson three brothers Jessie, Charlie and Yancy Richardson. Robert Lee Flowers, Jr.
Robert Lee Flowers, Jr., 77, of New Haven, departed this life March 3, 2008. He was the husband of Florice Wynn Flowers. Born in Goldsboro, NC, August 16, 1930, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Flowers, Sr. and Nora Flowers-Hamilton. Prior to retiring, he was employed at Winchester Repeating Arms and was also employed by Murphy’s Security at the Hospital of St. Raphael.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Annette Flowers and Otelia Darden; brothers, William Flowers and Robert Wynn; sisters, Cora Flowers, Barbara Jean Ramsey, Ethel Sampson and Ernestine Best; a brother in-law, William Newsome; ten grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a son, Linwood E. Flowers and a sister, Dorothy Newsome.

Willie (Tommy) Edwards
Willie (Tommy) Edwards departed this life on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at The Hospital of St. Raphael. He was born February 2, 1940 in Greene, NC to Lillian Wilkes Edwards and the late Johnnie Edwards. He was employed for 20 Yrs by the Sweetheart Cup Company in Kensington, CT. He is survived by his mother, two brothers, Hugh Edwards (Pat) and Calvin Edwards (Doris) of New Haven and eight sisters, Mildred Edwards, Lillian Blount (Robert), Martha Huckabey (Bruce) of Hamden, Velma Bouie White (Cornelius), and Ellen Ruth Jones of Kinston, NC Naomi Joyner (J.T.) and Annie Muhammad of New Haven, and Helen (Fabulous) Zackery of Bridgeport. 34 nephews and nieces, 58 great nephews and nieces and 11 great great nephews and nieces. Laureston Alexander Williams, 58, of New Haven, departed this life February 18, 2008 at CT Hospice. Born in Barbados, West Indies, December 3, 1949, he was the son of Una “Alma” Williams Woods and the late Harold Porte. Mr. Williams was a graduate of Atlantic Union College, South Lancaster, MA. In addition to his mother, he leaves to mourn his beloved sisters, Sherrill Greenidge and Maria Taylor of New Haven; a brother, Roderick “Roddy” Williams of Catonsville, MD; his stepbrother, John Woods, Jr. of New Haven; three nephews; six nieces; aunts, Ellen and Blanche Graham of New York; a cousin, Wilfred Sealy of North Haven; and his best friend, Joy Mullings of New Haven.

Mary F. Carmichael Mabry, 69, departed this life February 21, 2008. She was the wife of Johnny Mabry. Born in Winterville, NC, August 13, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Francis Joyner. In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish her memories, daughters, Gloria D. Hicks-Harris, Shenika Williams, Deborah, Tameka and Kezia Carmichael (Fred) and Mary Thomas (Albert); a son, Ryan Carmichael; 7 grandchildren; a great granddaughter; brothers, Charles Joyner (Icslean), Richard A. Minerva Gracia Roman, 63, of New Haven, passed away Saturday, February 23, 2008 in Yale New Haven Hospital. She was the widow of Alejandro Guzman. She was born June 25, 1945 in Juan Diaz, PR to the late Jose Gracia and Herminia Roman. Her survivors include sons Wilson (Amelia) Guzman, Alejandro Guzman, both of New Haven, CT, Jose ( Madeline) Guzman of New York, daughters Minerva and Omayra Guzman both of New Haven, stepdaughter Ava Cruz of New Haven, brothers Jose Gracia of Ponce, PR, Ito Gracia of Bronx, NY, 18 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Robert Jack Sessions
Robert “Bob” Jack Sessions of New Haven, suddenly departed this life peacefully on Saturday, February 23, 2008. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy R. McCoy Sessions, born in Hemingway, SC the oldest son of Annie M. Hickson Sessions and the late Enoch A. Sessions, he was educated in public schools in Florence SC. Bob entered the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1954, as a Staff Sergeant and supervised a unit.
He served in the Korean War and traveled to Japan. After leaving the service, he worked briefly in New Brunswick, NJ and relocated to New Haven to be with his family. He worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Industries. Robert started a floor cleaning business, and owned and operated Bob’s Auto Body at 223 Bassett St., New Haven for 39 years. He was proud to teach auto mechanics at Hillhouse High School and Eli Whitney for a short time. Bob was a long time faithful member of Community Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir. Robert affectionately known as Bob to family and friends leaves to cherish his memories his youngest brother Ralston “Leo” Sessions, Sr. (Hattie) of New Haven, (Mattie, Agnes, and Evelyn Sessions), and dear friend Sheila Jewell and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a daughter at birth; brothers Joseph Sessions, Willie James “Jimmie, and Enoch Lemar “Lee” Sessions. Ethel Williams of New Haven departed the life at age 86 on February 13, 2008. She is the widow of Robert J. Williams Sr. Mrs. Williams was born in New Haven, CT on November 5, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Dance. Mrs. Williams was a long-time employee of The Winchester Repeating Arms until her retirement in the early 80’s. She was a member of the Daughter Elks, Pocahontas Temple 55 I.B.P.O.E.W, and a member of the Dixwell Senior Citizen’s Organization. Mrs. Williams is survived by sons Charles H. Master Samuel William Jones
Samuel William Jones, 62, of New Haven passed away January 28, 2008. Born August 21, 1945 in Georgetown, SC to Theresa Green and Luther Drayton. Samuel was a retired Police Officer for the Hamden Police Department, with 20 years of service. He was the first black police officer in Hamden. Samuel was a member of Varick Memorial AME Zion Church. His family and friends knew him as a gentle giant, who was genuine and honest, and who enjoyed home renovations. He is survived by wife Janet Tucker Jones of New Haven; four sons Eric S. Jones, Sr. (N.H.P.D.) and Onsylo J. Jones both of Hamden Samuel Jones, Jr. of Pittsburg, PA, and Reginald D. Barbara Stewart of 559 Sherman Parkway, departed this life January 25, 2008 at Yale New Haven Hospital. Ms. Stewart was born in Maybeury, WV on January 14, 1935, daughter of Roxie Ann Dixon and the late James Twitty. She graduated from Hillhouse High School. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served her country for four years. She was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, New Haven for 35 years. Bobbi enjoyed watching sports and reading.

Sylvester Barber, 81, of New Haven passed away January 25, 2008. Born January 19, 1927 in Waynesboro, VA to the late David Crawford and Elizabeth Barber. Sylvester worked as a limousine driver for Levine Funeral Home. Sylvester also served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by grandchildren Brian Sams, Patrice Sanders, and Melva Sharpe; great grandchildren Jasmine Sams, Michael Sharpe, Jr., and Tiffany Sharpe; many cousins; one very special friend Leanne Moore, and many other relatives and friends. Solomon T. Norris, 71, of New Haven, departed this life January 27, 2008.
Born May 30, 1936 in Zanesville, OH, he was the son of the late Solomon T. and Neva R. Norris.
Mr. Norris was employed at Blakeslee Arpaia Chapman as a Construction Worker.
He leaves to cherish his memories, a daughter, Neva L. Sanders; a son, Solomon T. Norris, Jr.; a granddaughter, Natali N. Sanders; sisters, Dolores Spell Ashmore and Wanda Cooper; his former spouse, Lydia H. Norris; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by several siblings.

Audrey R. Kelly-Lanier, 44, of New Haven passed away peacefully January 7, 2008 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford, after a long battle with breast cancer. Born October 9, 1963, she was the daughter of Almeta Kelly & Calvin B. Hudson and Jesse & Barbara Lanier. Audrey is also survived by 4 brothers Stewart C. Kelly (Debra), Calvin E. Hudson, Barry D. Hudson and Jesse M. Lanier, Jr.; 2 sisters Lucinda B. Lanier and Tammy Dash (Antonio); 17 aunts and their spouses; 15 uncles and their spouses; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many devoted friends. Audrey was predeceased by her grandparents Lawrence and Leila Dow Kelly and Daniel Sr., and Beather Ormond Lanier.
Audrey graduated from Richard C. Lee High School, attended Stone Academy and graduated from the University of New Haven in West Haven, CT. Before her illness, Audrey worked as an Office Manager for her father at Springfield Food System (KFC) in Springfield, MA. Audrey loved her family and will be missed by many. Edna was employed for many years at the Jewish Home for the Aged as a Nurse’s Aide from which she retired in 1991. Edna was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents, her brother William “Bill” Sullivan, her sister Patricia “Pat” Williams, and her niece Allison Sullivan. She dedicated 35 years of service at Pratt & Whitney, A United Technologies Company, as a Head Inspector on 2nd shift. She was the First Lady of Second New Light Baptist Church of Bridgeport, CT, where her husband, Elder Clifton Jones, Sr. serves as pastor. In addition to her loving husband of 40 years, Elder Clifton Jones, Sr., she leaves a son, Clifton Jones, Jr.; daughters, Angela and Veronica Jones and Maritzka Stevenson (Elmer, Jr.); a sister, Iris Morris; an aunt, Annie Taylor; a cousin, Joyce Powers; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on July 2, 1971 and remained a faithful Witness for Jehovah until January 1, 2008 when our beloved Dorothy fell asleep in death. Elder Frank Clayton, Sr., 71
Elder Frank Clayton, Sr., 71, of New Haven, entered into eternal rest on December 29, 2007. He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 49 years, Dr. Willie Mae Clayton, Pastor of Christian Love Center Church.
Born in Montgomery, AL, September 30, 1936, he was the son of the late Frank Stovall and Mary Clayton.
Prior to retiring, he was employed at U.S. Repeating Arms and the Hospital of St. Raphael.
He was a member of Pitts Chapel Church and its male chorus for numerous years. Frank preached his initial sermon in January 1990 and in 1994 joined his wife in the opening of Christian Love Center Church. In 1995, he established the Christian Love Center Male Chorus.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Wayne (Laverne) and Frank Clayton Jr. (Desiree) of New Haven; daughters, Geraldine Johnson (James) of New Haven and Pamela Spann (Michael) of Orlando, FL; a grandchild, Jonita Clayton, whom he raised from birth; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brothers, Johnny and Ernest Clayton of New Haven, Joshua Smedley (Betty) of North Carolina and Al Stovall of Montgomery, AL; a sister, Jackie Stovall of Montgomery, AL; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by brothers, James and Albert Clayton.
A celebration of Elder Clayton’s life and legacy will be held Friday, January 4, 2008, at 7:00 PM at Agape Christian Center, 90 Goffe St., New Haven.
