Kindergarteners make airplanes Thursday.
Instead of sitting home playing video games, grade-schoolers are spending the week doing handstands around the gym, building airplanes and mini-solar houses, and making new friends, thanks to the lower-school version of a “Spring Fun Club.”

A day after gunmen fired 23 rounds in front of a preschool at dismissal time, social workers and cops showed up to reassure families, and the cops announced they’ve arrested the alleged shooters.

Sixth-graders Tyler and Troy took turns peering at the instruction manual that illustrated how the walls and gears in front of them fit together — and imagining the claw robot (“clawbot”) that would soon be roving around by their own design.
The team shared their work with New Haven legislators and leaders in the entrance of the Hillhouse High School athletic center on Monday morning, as Board of Ed officials announced a new program geared toward technology-curious students like Tyler and Troy.
The announcement: Next year, 45 ninth graders and five to 10 adult education students will be able to pursue an associate’s degree in manufacturing engineering technology at Gateway Community College alongside their high school degrees.

Robert Boyd stepped into his Dallas Cowboys slippers and took his granddaughter out on Orchard Street to the school bus stop — unaware they’d be staying there for close to an hour.

Fiore: Hard work is worth it.
As Anthony Fiore finishes up his two-year term as a Board of Education student representative, his final tasks include finding another brave student leader to succeed him.
Fiore, 18, is a senior at High School in the Community. He reflected on his pandemic-era term serving as a student representative for the Board of Education.
New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) has been working to help students advance more than a year in math and reading in a year’s time, as newly released numbers show how far some have fallen behind both socially and academically due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
