New Haven has a long history of divisive ethnic and machine politics, a leading political scientist told supporters of the “People’s Caucus.” He told the group he believes it could be one of the few to overcome that history.

Maybe Tatianna Walker will grow up to be a doctor because way back in Christmas 2014, when she was 6 and times were tough for her family, Tatianna was able to get a Doc McStuffins doctor dress-up toy and begin to perfect her bedside manner.
The revival of Dixwell’s beloved Community “Q” House has a price sticker: $13.4 million and change. Now its backers plan to take a bus trip to Hartford, to lobby state officials to help pay.

As he contemplates closing up his sprawling 80-year-old family-owned engine repair business, Pete Nizen III pointed out some of the patients awaiting attention — a 1938 Mercedes crankshaft, a 1939 Mack truck engine, a 1954 firetruck engine.

Black fathers of the 1950s may have experienced such pain they never said, “I love you,” but at least they supported their children, even those born out of wedlock. Young men today just puff out their chests at how many babies they make, and take a walk.
Sharon Brooks made that real-life argument as she and others at Dixwell’s Stetson Branch Library applied a play’s lessons to their community’s real life.
Dixwell volunteers, in conjunction with the cops, are gearing up for a massive distribution of meals to hungry people on Thanksgiving, in memory of recently departed community leader Mae Ola Riddick.
As hundreds gathered to mourn Erika Robinson, they honored her not just in memory and words of praise. They wore the designs and styles she created before a mass shooter’s stray bullet cut her life short.
Erich Davis showed eight cords of wood piled high into a maze set in a sun-lit drill hall. David Thompson evoked absence in a darkened Room 319 where long-gone officers once filled the lockers with their gear. Roxane Crane hung her drawings in a stall shower, above the medicine cabinet and across the lid of a long-broken toilet.

Rev. Frederick “Jerry” Streets is about to assume a new pulpit from which to preach in favor of changes New Haven hasn’t seen since the Civil Right era.
