Between the hours of 11 a.m. to 12 noon, close to 80 people had already streamed through the sixth annual Health Fair and Symposium, held by the New Haven Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Elks Club on Webster Street.
As a fleeing suspect barreled his BMWX5 through New Haven streets in the middle of the night, Hamden police followed close behind. Lt. Marty Tchakirides had to make a split-second decision. He radioed an urgent message for New Haven’s cops who had joined the chase.

As neighbors complained of overly aggressive use of tasers, New Haven’s chief unveiled a directive to examine how his officers deploy the newly popular weapon — every time they pull the trigger.

Before he became a police officer, Anthony Duff always got his hair cut at a barbershop on Dixwell Avenue. He married at the Elks Lodge. He took his kids for good times and free food at Ruth Henderson’s annual block party on Dickerman Street every year without fail. So when he became Dixwell’s top cop in 2002, he said, “for me leaving home to come to work was like coming to my second home.”

When George Clarke often drives down busy, vibrant State Street, he thinks back to the Dixwell Avenue of his youth — when anyone who purchased a new car showed it off with a promenade down the heart of the African-American community all the way to Webster Street.
A boy in Dixwell just turned 13. The older boys want him to hang out with them. They indulge in mischief. So Officer James Baker made the boy what he hopes is a better offer.
Ninety-year-old Geneva Elm didn’t want the absentee ballot application Cordelia Thorpe offered. “I’ll come to the poll. I’ve got osteoporosis. I need the exercise,” she said.

As she surveyed a room full of donated building supplies, Devonne “Da Bomb” Canady said she has nearly everything she needs to open her new Dixwell boxing gym, except a ring. Then, as if on cue, Officer James Baker and his wife walked in.
In her quest to topple a Dixwell alderman, Jeanette Morrison had an extra weapon Tuesday: A minivan-turned-campaign-shuttle bringing loads of Yale students to her polling station.

A cross-neighborhood chase ended near Goffe Street Park Wednesday afternoon, as police caught up with a man who allegedly rammed into a police cruiser.

(Updated 8:41 a.m.) One day after announcing they’d solved one 2011 homicide, cops converged on the Dixwell neighborhood to make an arrest in a separate one.
Calling the incumbent an “absentee alderman” who is not giving Dixwell residents a seat at the city’s table,repeat challenger Lisa Hopkins held a meet-and-greet as part of her fifth attempt to win the Ward 22 seat. “The fifth time is the charm,” she said.
In the midst of a heated re-election campaign, Mayor John DeStefano asked congregants in Dixwell and Newhallville to join him in a crusade — and he didn’t mention voting.
A recent report from New Haven’s Public Health Department found that in 2008, 100 percent of people arrested for murder in the city were under the age of 35. Half of those were under 25. But a small library, tucked into a strip mall in a neighborhood that has seen its share of violent incidents, is making a real difference with young people.
